Implementation of the Digital Services Act in 2025: Impact on Users and Businesses
As of 1 June 2025, the Digital Services Law (DSL), approved by the European Union in 2022, will be fully implemented, imposing greater responsibilities on online platforms to ensure security and transparency in the digital environment. This regulation aims to protect users from illegal content and to improve the supervision of the recommendation algorithms used by large technology companies.
One of the key aspects of the LSD is the obligation for platforms with more than 45 million users in the European Union to establish effective mechanisms for the removal of illegal content within a maximum period of 24 hours. In addition, greater clarity is required on how their advertising and content personalisation systems work, with specific measures to prevent disinformation and digital manipulation.
In the area of privacy, the regulation strengthens the protection of users' personal data, requiring greater transparency in the processing of information and giving citizens greater control over their data. Penalties for non-compliance can reach up to 6% of the global turnover of the offending companies.
SF Abogados highlights the importance of this legislation for businesses and consumers, as it represents a significant change in the regulation of the digital environment. Technology companies will have to adapt their policies and procedures to comply with the new requirements, while users will benefit from greater security and control over their online experience.
If your company offers digital services and you need advice on how to adapt to this regulation, SF Abogados is ready to offer you the best legal guidance.
