Stay in Spain for students according to the new foreigners' regulations
When the new Foreigners' Regulations come into force on 20 May 2025, students will be able to obtain a long-term residence permit for these studies:
- Advanced studies.
- Post-compulsory Secondary Education studies.
- Student mobility programmes.
- Volunteering services within a programme that pursues objectives of general interest for a non-profit cause.
- Carrying out training activities such as:
- Translators.
- Language studies.
- Courses for Access to Healthcare Training.
- Training to obtain technical aptitude certification or full professional qualification.
- Intermediate or Higher Vocational Training.
The studies must be taken in duly Authorised and Registered Centres in Spain for the respective training.
Likewise, one of the new features of this new regulation is that up to 50% of the programme taught may be distance learning, while 50% must be face-to-face.
The study stay will be valid for one year, except for higher studies of a longer cycle, in which case the authorisation will coincide with the total duration of the stay.
In the case of this type of stay, students are not automatically authorised to work, but once they have the student visa, they may request permission to work up to 30 hours per week.
You may also apply for authorisation for your family members in the following cases:
- Spouse, registered partner or duly proven stable partner.
- Unmarried minor children or children who have not formed their own family unit.
- Unmarried children of legal age who have not formed their own family unit and who need specific and personalised support due to disability or illness.
Authorisations for family members do not entitle them to work during their period of validity.
